School Captain is a student appointed or elected to represent the school in some cases the title is 'Head of School' or 'School Pupil Leader'.

This student, usually becomes the captain in the senior year, (Year 12, in secondary and Year 6 in primary schools) in their final year of attending that school. It is similar to "Student Body President" in the United States, it is the senior representative of a school's pupils, and the school, in the community.

School captains are mainly found in British Empire legacy school systems: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Zimbabwe. The School captain is chosen from the Lower Sixth formers by ballot, students vote in their respective hostels which are considered as constituencies and staff members also cast their votes. After election the Incumbent officially hands over his duties to the elected school captain on first day of October three to four weeks before public examinations start to enable the outgoing school captain to concentrate on his school work. It is not, however, usually used in the United Kingdom itself, where head girl and head boy are used.

In the election the students perform a speech infront of the school and tell the audience about their involvement and personal qualities, the students (audience) are asked to vote who they think the position should go to, but in some cases the teachers have the final decision due to the student thinking it is a popularity contest so the school knows the student can represent the school with success and ultimate behaviour.

Role and Responsibilities

The school captain can act as a liaison between the students at large and the faculty staff, and between the school and the community. If a student gets into trouble, it can reflect badly upon the captain. The captain may also represent the school in sporting events against other schools, this is more common with private schools. The responsibilities of a school captain are:

  • Meet with The Dean of Student of Life once per week to discuss school issues as they pertain to the student body's governance.
  • Work with Class Deans and me to plan school-wide events.
  • Meet with The Dean of Student Life weekly to establish healthy, working relationships.
  • Work with the Class Deans and me to continually improve student governance.
  • Be available to recruiting events so that we, as a school, increase our enrolment for school year.
  • Collaborate with the Class Captains to develop activities, events and leadership opportunities for the student body.
  • Promote further student leadership within the school.
  • Be available for events such as Open House, Grand Event, Shadow Days and any other school activity that requires your leadership.
  • Be a good role model for younger students

When running for or electing school captaincy's there is certain things that should be considered first. A good School captain must be involved in the school and community prior to the role of captaincy as well as having before experienced a leadership roles responsibility.

Usually, School Captains are appointed with a badge, one that is evidence of their status.
